"The volt is becoming very real very fast." That's how GM CEO Fritz Henderson described progress on the Chevy Volt. It's a plug-in vehicle that was originally touted as being able to travel 40 miles before needing a drop of fuel. This week GM added another impressive number; 230 miles per gallon.
We are starting to see video of pre-production models of GM's Volt. If the above numbers hold true, it will shatter previous hybrid records.
GM's Vice Chairman spoke exclusively with InstantRiverside.com about the targeted launch. Early advertising gave the vehicle a targeted launch of 2010. Lutz explains this more clearly in our video report on the right of your screen.
Lutz says that the company has built 50-to-75 Volts and that for pre-production purposes some of them are parading around under the skin of another car.
As for a media test drive; Lutz told me they're not quite ready for that just yet. "Really, we're just moving along on this project remarkably well," Lutz said.
