Sam Maloof, the furniture designer and woodworker recognized as a master American craftsman, has died at 93.

Maloof, who was born in Chino, died Thursday night at his Alta Loma home, according to Roslyn Boch of Maloof Furniture.

Maloof was awarded a MacArthur “genius” grant in 1985, and his works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

An exhibit of Maloof’s work, “Grace and Grain,” is at the Riverside Art Museum through July 2. The museum canceled a Thursday screening of a Maloof documentary that his assistants had been scheduled to attend.

Maloof is survived by Beverly Wingate Maloof, a former president of the Junior League of Riverside.
