Gavin Newsom drops out of the race for Governor of California

The hero among proponents of gay marriage is out of the contest for California Governor. After much speculation, and many rumors denied, it’s official– Gavin Newsom will continue as mayor of San Francisco a little longer than he — and many in the gay community — had hoped.

Just two days before dropping out of the race to become California’s next Governor Gavin Newsom scoffed at a reporter’s question about quitting– he called it “an absolute lie”– and then laughed– asking the reporter “where do you get this stuff.” (The reporter was Hank Plante of KPIX-TV in San Francisco, C.A.)

Newsom was being asked because his campaign was having trouble raising money, and Newsom has been sliding in the polls, losing by as much as 20 points. Even in San Francisco, Newsom was down by 11 points.

Newsom jumped into the race earlier than anyone else, and in other parts of the state, he was seen the liberal Mayor who supported same-sex marriage — a question that followed him at virtually every town-hall meeting– he’s had about 30 statewide.

It’s impossible to know if that made Newsom a single issue candidate among voters, but even calling in support from former President Bill Clinton, Newsom didn’t gain the traction required at this state of the race.

The formal announcement came at 3:02 Friday afternoon. Newsom wrote “With a young family and responsibilities at city hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to — and should be — done.”

Former Governor Jerry Brown, now California’s Attorney General, is currently the Democratic front runner in this race– and he hasn’t even declared his candidacy.
