Chastity Bono, celebrity offspring of Sonny and Cher, has announced the decision to undergoe a sex change.
Bono, 40, the author of “Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming-Out Process for Gays, Lesbians, & Their Families,” came out 20 years ago and has been an outspoken gay and lesbian activist.
According to the Associated Press, Bono has already begun the sex-change process and will go by Chaz.
Bono’s publicist, Howard Bragman, said Bono “has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity” and began the sex-change process earlier this year.
Bono’s father, Sonny Bono, was mayor of Palm Springs and a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives; his wife at the time of his death in a skiing accident, Mary Bono Mack, currently holds that seat.
