Starbucks to raise some prices

The cost of buying some coffee drinks at Starbucks is about to increase. The coffee company reports that its cost for “labor-intensive and larger-sized” beverages will go up.

In a statement released by the company, the price hike was blamed on “dramatic increases in the price of green arabica coffee, currently close to a 13-year high,” according to Starbucks.

Starbucks purchases coffee products in large quantities on the commodities market, which is driven by speculation and demand.

“Over the last six months a highly speculative green coffee market and dramatically increased commodity costs have completely altered the economic and financial picture of many players in the coffee industry,” said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, in a prepared statement.

Bottom line, in most cities, the $1.50 tall brewed coffee will not change. As for “labor-intensive and larger-sized beverages,” expect to pay more. Starbucks did not disclose what drinks may increase or by how much.
